Trans2loacted - Lifeless

Japan Screen and Design Project

In November of 2023 I travelled to Japan for my first ever creative internship. I was briefed to create a contemporary art piece inspired by art and technology innovations from Geelong, Australia and translocate them for an audience in Nagoya, Japan. Both Geelong and Nagoya are UNESCO cities of design. I explored links between these two cities, within a collaborative team.

Memory of Metal

Our piece, Memory of Metal, focuses on the conceptual interpretation of Advanced Alloys and Industry Materials. Our installation delicately orchestrates the passing of time and light. Each moment is suspended, orchestrating a luminescent dance echoing the present and memory of the metal (past). The intention was to communicate a binary notion of the past and present reflected into one another, questioning what the future has in store for us.

Lifeless

The second phase of the project involved focusing on the impact that Advanced Alloys and Industry Materials has on the environment, and how our current production methods of one of Australia’s most energy consuming materials is impacting our environment and our natural wonders.

Did you know that Aluminum production in Australia contributes to 6.5% of greenhouse gas emissions which impacts the Australian environment and is increasing the likelihood of climate change.

While the Memory of Metal aims to question what the future has for us, Lifeless aims to show this future in an Australian context. As Australia is vastly known for it’s natural wonders, Lifeless aims to depict these natural wonders in a state of decay, frozen in time and a memory that is mocked by the capitalistic and money hungry world of the advanced industrial future.

This haunting collection of three multimedia collage works aims to depict what our future looks like if change is not achieved. An imbalanced and frozen world that reflects our failure to protect the natural wonders of our land.
